Chapter Seventeen

Riley and Lexica marshaled our forces to prepare for the evacuation. Though I was weak, and often times unconscious, I managed to speak with the officers of our army.

They weren’t exactly thrilled to be taking orders from Lexica. Up until very recently, they still thought we were waging war against her.

The officers told their men that things had changed in the last few days, and that kept the soldiers in line, although I knew they didn’t like it.

Along with this distrust of Lexica, there was a fog of despair hanging over the men and mer that had been stationed in Riverside City.

Though our casualties had been minimal during the attack, our soldiers still felt as though we’d been defeated.

In a way, they were right. If it hadn’t been for my murderous frenzy, there was a fair chance that the battle wouldn’t have gone our way.

And now, due to the damage done to the city, we had to abandon it. In a very real sense, one could very easily count this as a defeat.

Yet, there was nothing to be done about that now. Remaining in Riverside City wasn’t an option. I needed to heal and, if Kalaban launched another attack, I’d be in no condition to fight.

In my state, raw teleportation was out of the question. I’d never survive it. That meant I’d have to be carried along with the other wounded soldiers on the road back to Nindor City.

I didn’t like it. It made me feel weak. It made me feel like a burden.

However, the soldiers who took turns carrying my gurney only showed appreciation for me.

“We’d be dead if not for you, Lord Hunter,” one young wood elf soldier said.

“Aye,” another soldier echoed. “And we’re sorry about Lady Dasha. She was a brave one, alright.”

I had to hold back tears. “Yeah she was,” I said. “She was indeed a brave one.”

Ronny often came to me when I slept. It was difficult to tell if these were dreams, or if Ronny was actually there in my thoughts.

To be honest, it didn’t matter to me. I just liked hearing the sound of my little brother’s voice.

I couldn’t see him. I couldn’t even see myself. I’d drift in a dark void of unconsciousness then hear his voice ring out.

“You did well, Kyle,” Ronny said.

“I very nearly killed Lexica and Riley,” I countered.

“But you didn’t,” Ronny said.

“I lost control.”

“Then you got it back.”

“I miss you, buddy.”

“I miss you, too, big brother,” Ronny answered. “But now I’ve got to go back. I need to keep tabs on what Scourge is up to.”

“Don’t,” I said. “It’s too dangerous. Just hide, bud.”

Though I couldn’t see his face, I nevertheless could tell that Ronny was smiling at me.

“Don’t tell me what to do,” Ronny answered.

Then I’d wake up.

We’d been marching for a few days. I felt just as weak as I had before.

When I looked at my stats in my spirit sight, I confirmed my suspicions.
